DeoxIT® on Faulty GM switch
by Rob Potter, Perion Technologies, Inc.
I have high resolution photos of a replacement automobile electrical switch that got hot enough to melt. I wanted to e-mail the photos to an engineer at General Motors, but when I tried to contact GM, their website has no feedback or contact ability without downloading and mailing a form! You guys get the credit for a great product.
I am talking about heat buildup in a NEW replacement switch from General Motors. The original switch started smoking and was replaced, and the replacement switch started smoking after a few months. (The replacement switch contacts looked bright and clean prior to install.
I cleaned all the contacts on the wiring harness, and on the problematic replacement switch, then applied DeoxIT® D5 to both. Two months of heavy air conditioner use so far, and no smoke!
Engineers need to keep in mind, the long service life of their designs, and the resulting effects over time. Obviously, there is a market for a product to seal out moisture and oxygen on connectors, and the plan should include treating the connectors with a DeoxIT® product.
Thanks,
