Can DeoxIT® and DeoxIT® GOLD be used directly on relay contacts?

Yes, DeoxIT® and DeoxIT® GOLD may be used directly on relay contacts. Generically speaking, if you chose to use the DeoxIT® spray (D5S-6), which includes a solvent), you should wait 2-3 minutes before energizing the relay to prevent a flammability issue. You could also choose the DeoxIT® liquid (D100L), which has no solvent, but you must wipe off the excess.

Once our product is applied to the contact, it will deoxidize the metal, then seal it against future contamination. In the case of a relay contact at high voltage, the arcing will vaporize the DeoxIT® or DeoxIT® GOLD at the arc point, then it will reseal the surface.

Using DeoxIT® and DeoxIT® GOLD is a good idea because it will improve the performance and longevity of the relay.

We were recently told of a mining operation in the south where a very large relay (contactor) had an operating voltage well beyond our stated product temperature range. We recommended that they try DeoxIT®, and the result was that instead of replacing the contacts every few days, they extended the life of the contacts to about 3-4 weeks.
