How do I remove IC leg discoloration?
Depending on the severity of the discoloration on the surface, we recommend three procedures:
1. Apply DeoxIT® contact cleaner to the IC legs and IC socket. Allow DeoxIT® to sit on the surface as long as possible (24 hours is ideal). This will remove all oxidation from the surface and restore performance.
2. Clean the surface with alcohol or spray a burst of DeoxIT® spray on the surfaces to flush away dissolved contamination.
3. As a final step, apply a thin layer of DeoxIT® GOLD for maximum performance and protection.
The above procedure will restore the performance of the connection, however, IF REMOVING THE SUPERFICIAL DISCOLORATION COMPLETELY is your goal, follow one of the recommendations below: Apply CaiKleen TNX solution to the pin surfaces. Allow to remain on the surface for up to 30 seconds. Flush the surface completely with DeoxIT®, CaiKleen NF or CaiKleen A/V).
It is important to COMPLETELY remove the TNX from the surface, because it will be conductive and will short out pins. Once that is accomplished, apply one short burst of DeoxIT® GOLD spray.
3. If the above procedures do not work, don't be concerned with the superficial discoloration. The performance will be maximized with the first procedure. If an improved appearance is still required, the below procedure can be tried, but MAXIMUM CARE and PROTECTION should be used by the technician:
CAREFULLY add hydrochloric acid to distilled water with 1 part acid to 99 parts water and apply to the IC legs.
REMEMBER: ALWAYS ADD ACID TO WATER. NEVER ADD WATER TO ACID.
If the above combination is not successful, increase the strength until you have achieved a suitable efficiency level. Once treated, remove the above solution with water, then with Ultra Pure (99%) Isopropyl Alcohol, and follow procedure #1 above.
If you are unfamiliar with hydrochloric acid, or are at all concerned about using it, that is completely understandable. It is essential that you wear protective gloves and clothing, and observe care AT ALL TIMES with such a solution.
