Caikleen vs. DeoxIT®
I'm an electrician for Pratt & Whitney (P&W), located in North Berwick, ME, which is a company of United Technologies Corp. (UTC).
I recently purchased one of the small 'Survival' kits with DeoxIT and it was able to break up our stubborn coolant/oily residues. Our stranded copper wiring wicks up the contamination and turns the conductor surfaces black (so stripping back the insulation for a clean connection doesn't work). I was very pleased with the performance of the DeoxIT product because we could get back to the clean copper for repairing connections. DeoxIT definitely out performs all other products that we have tested over the past couple of years.
I was wondering though, if DeoxIT might be a little over engineered (both from a cost effective and solvent strength perspective) for wiping down exterior surfaces and flushing out barrel connectors and screw terminal blocks? I saw that your company also offers CaiKleen NF, which is another product that I was thinking of testing.
Which applications would you recommend CaiKleen for in contrast to jobs that are more effectively treated by DeoxIT? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
R. Durocher .....
The difference between the CaiKleen and the DeoxIT is that CaiKleen is a solvent and the DeoxIT may or may not contain solvent (depending on whether surface flushing is required). The active chemicals in the DeoxIT penetrate the metal surface and continue to fend off future intrusion of oxidation and contaminants.
The following link explains why DeoxIT products are different than other "contact cleaners," (CaiKleen would be included in that group):

For reference: The D5S-6 and D5MS-15 both have flushing capability, but take 2-3 minutes for the carrier solvent to evaporate. The DN5S-6N and DN5MS-15 contain a custom carrier solvent that evaporates almost instantly and features quick-dry, non-drip and nonflammability, as well.
Now for your last question, "... Which applications would you recommend CaiKleen for in contrast to jobs that are more effectively treated by DeoxIT?"
We recommend using DeoxIT whenever or wherever you wish to treat a surface and be done with it for a significant amount of time vs treating and re-treating a surface endlessly; thus sacrificing time, money and equipment performance in the process.
