How long does DeoxIT® GOLD last?

I just applied DeoxIT® GOLD, formerly ProGold to all the connections on my home stereo. Is there a point where product "breaks down" and becomes less effective and should be reapplied to the contact points? If so, what procedure and cleaning material do you recommend for doing so?

Thank you.

Sincerely,
C. W. Frahme

Your initial question is dependent on a number of issues including, ambient temperature, air quality, humidity, etc.

Our recommendation is to note when you treated the connectors the first time. Then when you notice (hear) a reduction in performance, move your maintenance schedule back by 2-3 months from the first treatment, and you will never experience diminished connector performance again.

As far as a cleaning procedure, the following is an excerpt from our online tutorial:

If the connector is visibly dirty (oxidized):

1. Apply DeoxIT® to the contact/connector surface before applying DeoxIT® GOLD.

2. If the surface is heavily oxidized, leave the DeoxIT® on overnight, if possible.

3. The following day, remove any contaminants lifted by the DeoxIT® with a lint-free swab and “canned” (compressed air), if possible. Repeat process, if the surface is heavily oxidized. Finish with a couple of short bursts of DeoxIT®.

If the oxidized connector is plated metal (i.e. gold, silver, zinc, nickel, etc):

Apply DeoxIT® as directed above.
Once no further oxidation comes off on the lint-free cloth or swab, apply DeoxIT® GOLD. Maintain thereafter with DeoxIT® GOLD.

If the connector is plated metal, and the surface is pristine (clean):

Apply DeoxIT® GOLD.
