Magnetic Fader Maintenance Recommended by RANE
Lubrication of RANE Magnetic Faders (ttm-56 - Mark X)
Originally RANE recommended the CaiLube™ X-10S, which --- as with any lubricant applied to the No Contact Magnetic Fader, should be applied only to the support rod, not the drag rod. The CaiLube X10S™ is in print but may change soon. For most people who have evolved with Rane DJ mixers, we tell them the *CaiLube™ MCL 100%, typically already in the DJ's possession, works very well too. Here in RANE Service we use the CaiLube™ MCL100% in the bottle, with a needle applicator (MCL100L-25C).
Either chemical works well, when applied sparingly. Many users simply apply too much, or do not remove the grime first. The mechanism is comprised of an injected Delrin carrier holding a magnet. This piece glides on two electro-polished stainless steed rods. At each end is a magnetic hall sensor, which reads flux density and translates this into proximity information.
The microcontroller uses magnet proximity to manipulate the audio circuits. Most of the drag and sticking issues can be traced to contamination on the rods and sometimes those pollutants can make their way into the crevices of the Delrin carrier. In those instances, it is practical to clean the rods vigorously with isopropyl alcohol and run the fader back and forth repeatedly, to purge the carrier opening.
Finally, a "no drag" feel can be accomplished by carefully repositioning the spring so zero contact is made with the drag rod. Chris Duncan RANE Corporation
